Asia and the Pacific

With 55 countries, the Asia and Pacific region is the most populous in the world. In every country except the Philippines, Tonga, and Fiji, Christianity is a minority religion. Significant mission efforts include church development, pastoral training, health care, human rights promotion, peace activities and humanitarian relief. Ecumenical relationships are also strong, including collaboration with the East Asia Christian Council and the Amity Foundation in China.

Regional Office

Global Ministries Asia Regional Office 2019

Seoul, South Korea

The Global Ministries Asia regional office, located in Seoul, South Korea, helps to create local partnerships as the church grows through Asia. Opened in March 2017, the new regional office is within blocks of where the first Methodist missionaries to Seoul began working in the 1880s. The missionaries started schools and health care ministries and laid the foundation for a flourishing Methodist denomination.

Ministry Office

Manila, Philippines

Global Ministries’ joint office with United Methodist Communications in Manila, Philippines, extends the presence of The United Methodist Church in Asia. Staff members from both agencies will work in the space, creating a base for work in the Philippines Central Conference, the only Central Conference in Asia. Persian Gulf countries are included in the outreach that will take place from the Manila office.

The office is particularly helpful for the United Methodist Committee on Relief, a unit of Global Ministries, as it works with local partners in responding to the growing number of typhoons and other disasters in the area. The office also will enable Global Ministries to use the Philippines more as a resource in mission and ministry in the region.

Darlene Marquez-Caramanzana leads Global Ministries' work in the office as area liaison for Asia and the Pacific.
