United Methodists Continue Call for Immediate Release of Missionaries
Being Held by Republic of the Philippines

Atlanta, Ga. (June 27, 2018) – United Methodists worldwide have the opportunity to combine their prayers for the safety and release of three young United Methodist missionaries being prevented by the government of the Philippines from leaving the country.

Prayer is a major component of the “Let Them Leave” campaign launched on June 27 by United Methodist Global Ministries, the denomination’s mission agency.

Prayer participants are asked to pray every day at noon, wherever they are, until Tawanda Chandiwana of Zimbabwe, Miracle Osman of Malawi and Adam Shaw of the United States are allowed to leave the Philippines. Chandiwana has been jailed for six weeks, originally for letting his visa expire. Osman and Shaw have encountered problems obtaining exit documents from the Philippines Bureau of Immigration. Mr. Chandiwana and Ms. Osman are Global Mission Fellows; Mr. Shaw a global missionary of Global Ministries. (For additional information on each situation, see

The Council of Bishops suggests the following or similar prayer: “God of grace and peace, be with our missionaries. Keep them free from harm. Bring them home. Lord, hear our prayer. Amen.”

Other action items include signing an online petition and participating in the Global Ministries social media campaign to secure their freedom. For information on actions see
