Global Ministries and Liberia Annual Conference Agreement Reached on Audit and Accountability
By Roland Fernandes*
Global Ministries recently conducted audits of the Liberia Annual Conference to verify the diversion of Global Ministries funds, overdrawn accounts, and unsupported expenditures that were brought to Global Ministries’ attention in late 2016. The final audit, conducted by the accounting firm of Moore Stephens International Limited, a global accountancy and consultancy headquartered in London that conducts many of Global Ministries’ audits around the world, found that the Liberia Annual Conference owes Global Ministries $270,545 (USD).
The Liberia Annual Conference has agreed to replenish the missing funds by making quarterly payments to Global Ministries over the next two and half years, beginning in June, 2017.
Two weeks ago Global Ministries and the Liberia Annual Conference entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The primary points of the MoU are that Global Ministries will lead the treasury functions of the Liberia Annual Conference by providing a missionary (already in place) as an interim treasurer.
Based on the memorandum signed with the Liberia Annual Conference for the handling of funds and the agreement of the Liberia Annual Conference to replenish the missing funds within the prescribed period, Global Ministries will resume funding to the Liberia Annual Conference with immediate effect.
Global Ministries acknowledges the prompt action taken by the Liberia Annual Conference led by Bishop Samuel Quire to replenish the funds and agree to the new funding arrangement.
