In Lambaré, Paraguay, where children and youth make up 70 percent of the population, and where drugs, gangs, and violence are prevalent, the presence of the local Methodist church is critical to providing hope and positive opportunities for vulnerable young people.

When UMC #GivingTuesday donations went to New Horizon Methodist School, Advance #3021089, at-risk youth gained an opportunity to change their destiny by going to school. The gifts allowed New Horizon, which serves about 665 students, to provide additional scholarship funds for students, as well as fill the gap when parents could not afford the costs of books or school fees.

“In the area of Lambaré there are many low-income families,” said Sue Givens, director of New Horizon Methodist School. “The UMC #GivingTuesday funds we received in the last two consecutive years are helping us reduce the overall costs for many of our students who cannot afford full tuition.”

“We’ve also seen teenagers who once ran with the wrong crowd, stealing and living a life of crime, to becoming fully engaged class leaders and attending church regularly,” continued Givens.

Many students at New Horizon Methodist School have earned partial or full scholarships and are studying in Paraguayan programs for higher learning, including a student in a Methodist seminary.
