The Rev. Lourdes Calderon is a missionary with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries serving as coordinator of Hispanic/Latino ministry for the Rocky Mountain Annual Conference. She was commissioned in June 2018.
/Latino population is a growing reality in the Rocky Mountain Conference, which spans six districts across Colorado, Utah and
two-thirds of Wyoming. Spanish is spoken in ten percent of the homes in the region.
Lourdes is an ordained elder in the New Mexico Annual Conference and was formerly Hispanic/Latino ministries coordinator in that conference, which covers New Mexico and a part of West Texas. She holds a bachelor’s degree in theological science from the Universidad Biblica Latinoamericana in Costa Rica and a Master’s in Theological Studies from Iliff School of Theology, Denver, Colorado. She also studied at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas.
Lourdes served for two quadrennia as a director of Discipleship Ministries, with particular
focus on the National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry. She has been a member of the Methodist Border Ministry Committee, and in 2003-2005 was responsible for a Spanish-language Christian radio program on KKIM Albuquerque.
She was a volunteer chaplain for the City of Albuquerque at the SunPort
International Airport for a decade. In 2009, Lourdes was named by Bernalillo County as “Outstanding Citizen of the Year” for South Valley for community service and work with the sheriff’s department.
“My call is to serve God’s people and be an instrument sharing the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” Lourdes says. She feels a special challenge to be a Christlike presence to persons outside the church. Of her every activity, she asks, “how is this going to allow the church and me, as a pastor, to makes
disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world”.
