Yaweh Yahaya, a Global Mission Fellow with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, was commissioned in August 2018. He is engaged in a two-year term of service with the addiction ministry of the Northfield Methodist Church in Benoni, South Africa.

The Global Mission Fellows program takes young adults ages 20-30 out of their home environments and places them in new contexts for mission experience and service. The program has a strong emphasis on faith and justice. Global Mission Fellows become active parts of their new local communities. They connect the church in mission across cultural and geographical boundaries. They grow in personal and social holiness and become strong young leaders working to build just communities in a peaceful world.

Yaweh is from Jalingo, Taraba State, Nigeria. He is a member of the Nayin United Methodist Church in the Central Nigeria Annual Conference. He holds a diploma in environment health from Taraba State College of Health Technology and a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science from Africa University, the United Methodist-related institution in Zimbabwe. Yaweh was active in student government at Africa University and in campus ministry at Taraba State.

Having been raised in a Christian home, Yaweh learned at an early age about the faithfulness and wonder of God. He says he saw God’s power at work even in times of problems and challenges. He believes faith in God is the answer to the trials currently faced by humanity.
His call to mission, he says, is rooted in “a burning desire to see the reduction of social violence that is the major cause of civil unrest in many parts of the world today.

“I have seen and tasted the pain of social injustice,” Yaweh adds, “and I cannot expect someone else to bring about the needed changes. I wish to join in mission to equip myself with the knowledge and skills necessary to bring about the change I wish to see for a better tomorrow for all of us.”
