#982670 - Supporting community-based restorative justice programs to bring healing and systemic change

Annual Goal:$25,000.00
Location: Global Global
Partner:General Board of Global Ministries

Describe the need affecting constituents.

Too many communities around the world today are being torn apart by violence. At the same time, many people are wrongly imprisoned, subjected to human rights violations, or face harsh sentences for nonviolent offenses. Impoverished communities seek to restore justice between victim and offender, within communities and at a systemic level in respective criminal justice systems. We in the church are called to walk with communities facing violence and injustice in the restorative task of rebuilding right and just relationships.

Describe the purpose of the project.

The church has supported Restorative Justice Ministries since 1996 General Conference. The Restorative Justice Ministries Advance supports projects at community level in cooperation with Global Ministries.

Describe the primary goal of the project.

1. Support for education and training in peace building among youth and young adults in communities divided & devastated by systemic violence across the globe. 2. Support for local church/annual conference/ecumenical/interfaith restorative justice ministries with victims, offenders, prisoners, their families and communities which seek to heal and transform individuals and communities. 3. Support for and partnership with community-based and ecumenical ministries which address all aspects of retributive criminal justice systems at the local, regional, national levels; which seek to educate and advocacy against the death penalty; which address racial and economic injustice within communities and in criminal justice systems; which address crime prevention and restoration; which address police brutality; and, which seek reparation and alternatives to mass incarceration. 4. Support for and partnership with projects, which address systemic change of retributive criminal justice systems. 5. Support for and partnership with programs and projects, which enable leaders from local churches and communities to be trained in conflict resolution, community dialogue, and mediation.
