Project Information

Training pastors and lay persons in leadership and theology.

Describe the need affecting community

On the one hand, the UMC in the various countries of Central and Southern Europe is surrounded by an increasingly secularized society (even in countries where still a large percentage of the population belongs to a specific denomination). On the other hand, there are many social needs (unemployment, hopelessness, poverty, social exclusion of ethnic minorities, breakup of traditionally strong family relations, etc.)

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

To train inspiring leaders is crucial for the further development of the UMC – not the least because of the fact that the committed and creative service of these leaders includes much more than worship services and pastoral care, but has, in many cases, positive effects far beyond the local churches. But of course it is also crucial for the empowerment of lay people to be credible witnesses of God’s love.

Describe the primary goal of the project

The primary goal of this project is to train leaders, both clergy and lay, so that the UMC in Central and Southern Europe can impact the society in many different ways. It’s about helping people to get to know Christ, to have new hope, to discover new perspectives…

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project

As a result of witness and service of the UMC, led by committed leaders, the community shall not consider the UMC to be a group of strange and unworldly people behind thick walls who can easily be neglected because they do not have any social relevance.
