Mission Volunteer Opportunities: Africa

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (DRC)

Location: The English-speaking School of Lubumbashi (TESOL).   The school offers pre-kindergarten to high school education for students who come from a variety of countries, including the DRC.
Position: Teacher (any subject)
Duration:  10 months to 2 years
Estimated monthly living expenses: $500, which includes housing, meals, and utilities. Visa and transportation costs additional. 


Work description
: The volunteer will teach at a variety of levels depending on the needs of the school and experience of the teacher. A teaching certificate is desired by not required. Experience teaching children or youth highly desirable, as well as special education training.

KENYA 

Location #1: Maua Methodist Hospital.  The hospital is an outreach ministry of the Methodist Church in Kenya. 
Position: Nurse
Duration:  Two months to two years
Estimated monthly living expenses: $700, which includes housing, meals, and utilities. Visa and transportation costs additional. 


Work description
:The nurse will work to support the various departments within the Hospital, including the Community Health Department and medical outreach clinics. The nurse will triage and take vitals, work at medical outreach clinics and medical camp, and work in wards as needed or as specific to a specialty.

Location #2
: Maua Methodist Hospital.  

Position: Medical Specialist in various areas, such as Dentists, General Surgeons, OB/Gyn, Laboratory, Physical Therapy, Ophthalmologist, General Practitioners, and Family Practice Doctors
Duration:  Up to Three Months
Estimated monthly living expenses: $700, which includes housing, meals, and utilities. Visa, Kenya Medical License, and transportation costs additional. 


Work description
:The medical specialist will conduct ward rounds, specialized clinics, and work in theatre as need arises, guide and mentor, medical officer interns, conduct continuing Medical Education classes, and participate in daily morning handover reports.


Location #3: Living Hope High School  
Position: Secondary Teacher / Manager
Duration:  Six Months
Estimated monthly living expenses: $160, which includes housing, meals, and utilities. Visa and transport expenses to/from Nairobi, Kenya additional. 


Work description:
Living Hope High School serves the brightest and the poorest students in their area. The volunteer will provide supervision and guidance for students and teachers, manage the school and farm when director is away, and help recruit sponsors and donors for special projects. Professional teaching degree requested.


 

TANZANIA

Location #1:  Our Father's House
Position:        
Assistant Youth Project Coordinator
Duration:       At least six months
Estimated monthly living expenses: $200 plus visa and work permits, includes accommodations and meals.
Work description: The Assistant Youth Project Coordinator will work with the project coordinator to develop youth economic empowerment projects, build relationships with local youth through recreational activities and informal education workshops as well as assist with administrative tasks.

Location #2:  Wesley College in Mwanza
Position #1:   Assistant Computer Teacher
Duration:       At least three months.
Estimated monthly living expenses: $550 plus visa and work permits, includes accommodations and meals.
Work description: The Assistant Computer Teacher will teach computer short classes alongside local staff including basic computer applications, computer repair, basic programming languages, graphic design, database applications, IOS and android app development, and website design and programming.

Position #2:     Assistant Small Business Trainer
Duration:         Two months to two years
Estimated monthly living expenses: $530 plus visa and work permits, includes accomodations and meals.
Work description: The Assistant Small Business trainer will help with training and/or consulting small business or individuals who would like to start businesses in business basics; including, research, training design, advertising and networking, grant writing and partnership building.


Location #3: Wesley Primary School in Morogoro
Position: English teacher assistant
Duration: At least three months. Longer preferred
Estimated monthly living expenses:  $600 which includes accommodations and meals.   
Work description:  The volunteer will teach English and assist with other school activities.  The volunteer is also encouraged to participate in church activities and interact with the local community.  


Location #4
Angel House Children's Home and Secondary School 
Position: Teacher
Duration:  Two months to two years
Estimated monthly living expenses $470 plus visa and work permits, which includes accommodations and meals.

Work description:  Angel House Children’s Home and Secondary School is located in northwest Tanzania near the town of Tarime (near Lake Victoria). The orphanage is home to 70 orphaned and abandoned children, aged three to college-age and the secondary school has approximately 350 students. The ministry is focused on caring for orphaned children and providing an excellent education for the orphans as well as children in the surrounding community. Languages spoken are Swahili and English. Knowledge of Swahili is not required, but volunteers are encouraged to enroll in Swahili classes if staying more than three months. The volunteer will teach one of the following courses: English, mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, history, geography or Bible knowledge.


Location #5: The Mara Region is in the northwest corner of Tanzania.   


Position #1
: Social media/communications
Duration: At least three months.
Estimated monthly living expenses:  $350, which includes accommodations, meals and ground transportation.  A $250 work permit is required.
Work description: The ministry works in a rural and semi-rural (bush town) setting.  It works with local churches to help grow the ministries in their communities.  The communities’ needs and strengths are major factors in determining the scope of the ministry.  An attempt is made to make all of the ministries self-sustainable.  The location is in need of the following volunteers: The volunteer will help with maintaining social media sites, websites, and ministry blogs, and communicate with donors. 

Position #2: Women’s program coordinator

Duration: At least three months. 
Estimated monthly living expenses:  $350, which includes accommodations, meals and ground transportation.  A $250 work permit is required.
Work description:  The volunteer will work with the Emmanuel Center on helping with women’s craft projects for the purpose of income generation for the women.  The volunteer will also teach business skills.      


 

Estimated monthly living expenses:  $800, which includes housing meals and ground transportation.
