Tawanda Chandiwana

This missionary has completed service. His advance number will remain active until December 31, 2018.

Tawanda Chandiwana is a Global Mission Fellow of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, serving for two years with Initiatives for Peace Mindanao (InPeace) in the Philippines. He was commissioned in August 2016.

The Global Mission Fellows program takes young adults ages 20-30 out of their home environments and places them in new contexts for mission experience and service. The program has a strong emphasis on faith and justice. Global Mission Fellows become active parts of their new local communities. They connect the church in mission across cultural and geographical boundaries. They grow in personal and social holiness and become strong young leaders working to build just communities in a peaceful world.

InPeace, headquartered in Davao City on the island of Mindanao, is a grassroots, interfaith organization that works for peace and justice is an area often torn by economic, social, and political conflicts. It promotes human rights, peace education, research, and conflict resolution. InPeace is a long-time mission partner of Global Ministries. Tawanda works as a peace and advocacy associate.

Tawanda is from Zimbabwe, where he is a member of the Hilltop United Methodist Church in Mutare in the Zimbabwe East Annual Conference. He holds a Bachelor of Social Science degree in sociology and a masters’ degree in public policy and governance from Africa University, the United Methodist institution in Mutare. He has worked as a substitute school teacher.

Born and raised in The United Methodist Church, Tawanda says that “God has always been involved in my life and it is through his grace that I was lifted from the dust to become someone. Because God saved me, I live today to tell of his goodness and to glorify his name and to serve him any way I can.” Serving God, he believes, involves serving to others… “Over the years, my faith has grown stronger and I hope to continue to grow in social and personal holiness.”

He has been guided toward mission through reading the Bible, the influence of others, and an internal sense of service, that for him it is “the right thing to do….I have always been sure in my heart that mission is what I am supposed to do.”
