Rev. Grace Choi is a missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church assigned to the Philippines. She is working as a community health worker to several community outreach programs of Harris Memorial College in the Philippines. She also teaches piano and voice at the music department of the school.
Harris Memorial College has been a cradle of deaconesses and is a pioneer on early childhood education as the Philippines’ first school to establish kindergarten and train kindergarten teachers. For more than 100 years the college has been the only training center for deaconesses in Southeast Asia. It was established in 1903 and has played a major role in the ministry, life and mission of The United Methodist Church.
Grace shares her call to mission, "One morning during the devotion with my husband, we happened to feel God's heart for the Philippines. God was crying. So we began crying, saying, 'Father, what do you want us to do?' God answered, 'My justice be done, broken families be restored, and young people to have vision.' And the Lord has given us the word of promise, 'In faithfulness he will bring forth justice, he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope.' ” Isaiah 42:4.
Grace continues, "When I was a teenager, I prayed to be a missionary because I was influenced by so many missionaries' stories. So, I entered nursing college to prepare myself as a missionary...but I forgot my vision...and tried to find another way." When she was stricken with an illness doctors could not diagnose, Grace says, "Through the illness my mind was getting humble and I began to long for God and I recovered my vision to be a missionary. I committed myself to God and prayed on the basis of this verse: 'You may bring my salvation to the ends of the world.' "
Her first mission assignment was as a youth worker with the Philippine Annual Conference. Prior to accepting her mission assignment in 2002, Grace served as a pastor/educator in the elementary Sunday school of the Hindol Presbyterian Church in Seoul. She also worked three years in the cardiovascular unit of Severance Hospital, Seoul.
Grace is married to Jae Hyoung Choi, also a GBGM missionary. They have two sons, Soo Hoon and Ji Hoon.
