The Rev. Kristen Schmitz is a United Methodist missionary now serving as Missionary in Residence at the headquarters of the General Board of Global Ministries. In this position, which she assumed in the fall of 2015, she is a liaison between all United Methodist missionaries and the staff and board of directors of Global Ministries. Her husband Larry is also a Missionary in Residence.
Kristen and Larry previously served at the English-speaking School of Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, she as a general education teacher and he as a math and science teacher.
Kristen Schmitz, an ordained deacon of the Missouri Annual Conference, is a native of Missouri, born in St. Joseph, and has been involved in the Avondale United Methodist Church since she was three years old. She and her three brothers took part in every aspect of the congregation’s life. She felt called to ministry as a vocation, but not to preaching. It took a number of years before she discovered the diaconal order, to which she was consecrated in 1999 after training at Saint Paul School of Theology, Kansas City. She became a deacon in 2002 with the change in the denomination’s clergy terminology.
A graduate of Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, with a degree in elementary education, Kristen worked in a number of local church Christian education programs, and also did substitute teaching in North Kansas City, where her husband, Larry, was a teacher.
She and Larry Schmitz were married in 1977 and are sharing the calling to mission service. The couple has three adult children, Laura, married to David McDaniel; Nathan, whose wife is Maranda; and Brandon, who is hoping to serve as a military chaplain. Three young granddaughters, Meadow and Larken Schmitz, and Molly McDaniel, are among the greatest blessings God has sent to Kristen and Larry.
