The United Methodist Church partners with the Lower Myanmar Methodist Church, which was founded by American Methodist missionaries over 100 years ago. The Upper Myanmar Methodist Church was started by British Methodists, and there have been recent dialogues about merging the two Methodist churches, which has led to some joint undertakings in mission.
The Lower Myanmar Methodist Church began when the country was known as Burma and was considered a province of India under the British. In 1964, the Lower Myanmar Methodist Church gained its autonomy, and in partnership with Global Ministries, has concentrated on leadership development through scholarships and continuing education.
The church is also engaged in ministries providing a home for the elderly, helping youth develop livelihood skills, care for orphans and environmental awareness education.
