Background/History

The United Methodist Church in Sierra Leone operates over 300 elementary and secondary schools, four hospitals including an eye hospital, and seven other maternity and health centers. This work in the medical field is coordinated by the Global Ministries Missionary in Sierra Leone.

There are three ongoing agricultural and community development projects in operation. Church-supported ministries and service organizations include the Child Rescue Centre, which caters for the holistic development of over 200 war-affected and other vulnerable children, and three women’s training centers--Betty Carew in Yonibana, Kono Musu, in Koidu town and Urban Center in Freetown.

One major vision is the establishment of a United Methodist University. With grants from Global Ministries, UMCOR and General Conference, two of the university’s proposed schools—a school of theology and a school of nursing—are already being built.

Originating in the mission traditions of the United Brethren in Christ Church in 1855, the Sierra Leone United Methodist Church became an autonomous church in 1973 and then an Annual Conference within the West Africa Central Conference in 1984.
