Background/History
The most populous country in the sub-Saharan region of Africa, Nigeria has experienced several political disruptions in recent years and is experiencing religious violence. Homes, schools, and privately owned institutions have been burned or vandalized, and people have been traumatized. The United Methodist Church of Nigeria has been a voice for peace and reconciliation. The acting bishop has called for prayers to support all of God’s beloved children, regardless of religious affiliation.
The church offers hope through its colleges, primary schools, daycare centers, Bible colleges, a strong UM Women’s program and a growing number of churches. At the 2012 General Conference, the country applied and was approved to host three conferences: North, Central, and Southern.
