Located in West Africa, Côte d’Ivoire recently emerged from a protracted civil war that ended with the 2011 ceasefire. The war resulted in displacement, unemployment, and hardship for Ivorians. Banks, schools, and other institutions were closed, and the country literally came to a standstill, although it is slowly returning to normal.
The Ivorian United Methodist Church is helping the country rebuild. One of the country’s largest denominations, the well-respected church has been has been involved in the rebuilding through a variety of UM Women’s programs, support for a hospital, and training for pastors and laity. The Ivorian church also operates one of the largest school systems in the country with 49 primary schools, six kindergartens, seven high schools and one technical-vocational school. Though it continues to be supported by Global Ministries, work is under way to strengthen the system and increase self-sufficiency.
The church was preceded by the autonomous Protestant Church of Côte d’Ivoire, becoming a UM church with full membership recognized by General Conference in 2008.
