University United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas, offers the Helping Hands day-habilitation prevocational program, serving 63 participants who do jobs like those at Royal Oak. They also prepare the 3,000 candles and holders for the Christmas Eve service, and get bingo cards ready each week. The program has a spiritual component, and includes a walking group after lunch to provide exercise. The ministry recently launched a satellite program at the Bourne First United Methodist Church.

The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kan., sponsors a similar program called Sonflower Adult Learning (see http://archive.cor.org/events/church-calendars-service-opportunities/single-views/calendar-item/article/sonflower-adult-learning-program/back/5021/index.html). This new initiative offers two internships at a time, which, if successfully completed leads to part-time paid positions within the church. A staff job coach works with participants, and trains church employees to support independence in the workers.
