Noel D. Kumwenda
Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA)
Home Country: Malawi, Africa
Noel Kumwenda is a Global Mission Fellow with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, engaged in a two-year term of service. He was commissioned in August 2017.
The Global Mission Fellows program takes young adults ages 20-30 out of their home environments and places them in new contexts for mission experience and service. The program has a strong emphasis on faith and justice. Global Mission Fellows become active parts of their new local communities. They connect the church in mission across cultural and geographical boundaries. They grow in personal and social holiness and become strong young leaders working to build just communities in a peaceful world.
Noel is from Malawi, where he is a member of the Mzuzu Circuit of the United Methodist Church in the Malawi Provisional Annual Conference. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Africa University, the United Methodist-related institution in Zimbabwe. He also has a diploma in business management and a certificate in the same field from Mzuzu University in Malawi.
He has been an associate lecturer at Skyway University in Mzuzu and worked for two years with the Ungweru Organization, a Malawian grassroots movement to assist economically depressed communities to become self-reliant.
Born into a Christian family dependent on subsistence farming, Noel struggled to find funding for his secondary and college education and considers his eventual success a sign of God’s grace. “God has always been the pillar of my success,” he says.
Noel began to volunteer for mission projects early in his life. “My passion for mission grew when I was recruited for an internship at the Ungweru Organization. We went into the rural areas where we helped people to develop skills in entrepreneurship, agriculture-based business, and village savings and loan associations. We also monitored and evaluated the projects to see how they changed the lives of people.”
Noel will be working as a Climate Justice Advocacy Officer at Pan African Justice Alliance in Kenya.
