Erin Frey

Erin Frey is a Global Mission Fellow of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, serving for two years with the United Methodist Community Ministries Suncoast in the Florida Annual Conference. She was commissioned in August 2016.

The Global Mission Fellows program takes young adults ages 20-30 out of their home environments and places them in new contexts for mission experience and service. The program has a strong emphasis on faith and justice. Global Mission Fellows become active parts of their new local communities. They connect the church in mission across cultural and geographical boundaries. They grow in personal and social holiness and become strong young leaders working to build just communities in a peaceful world.

Global Mission Fellows in the United States work through geographic or organizational affiliates, such as the Florida Conference. Erin works as services coordinator for the Children’s Hunger Program of United Methodist Community Ministries Suncoast, the social services agency of the Gulf Central District of the conference. It conducts programs in literacy, early childhood education, family support, citizenship, and food services.

Erin is from Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she is a member of Westwood United Methodist Church in the West Michigan Annual Conference. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in speech pathology and audiology from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. She worked for several departments at the university and also in the food service industry. Her sister and brother-in-law are former Global Ministries’ missionaries.

Raised and active in the church from early childhood through high school, Erin entered into a time of uncertainty in her faith as she moved into college: “I became discouraged and couldn’t see how God was working in my life or what kind of plan he had for me.” A number of friends reached out to her, arranging for her to talk to a counselor and a pastor and to become involved in a Christian sorority. She found her way back to church, and responded favorably to an internal sense of call to mission.

“I still have a ways to go in my faith journey,” Erin says, “but I feel closer to God and sounder in my beliefs than I ever have in the past…I want to really put my faith in action and do God’s work wherever I am needed.”
