The UMCOR Hotline
In Today's Hotline:
US: FLOOD CONCERNS CONTINUE
In the UMCOR Notebook, the Rev. Lee Gale, Dakotas Annual Conference disaster response coordinator for North Dakota, shares about the flooding he witnessed firsthand in Bismarck, where the swollen Missouri River has caused massive flooding.
He writes, “Bismarck is now a city of contrast. In one section, floodwaters lap against homes, causing a great deal of concern on the part of the homeowner, while a few blocks away, another person’s greatest worry may be how low to cut the grass.
“This year’s flooding will be a long-term issue for Bismarck/Mandan as it will be, also, for the communities down river,” Gale commented.
Besides the Dakotas Annual Conference, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is currently responding to flood emergencies in another 13 conferences across the United States, as well as to the catastrophic fallout from this spring’s record-setting tornadoes and storms.

HAITI: SOLAR PANEL KITS FOR RURAL FAMILIES
UMCOR is working with Eglise Methodiste d’Haiti (EMH) to procure and distribute 1,000 solar panel kits to families and individuals on the island La Gonave to provide additional security and support to rural homes. La Gonave was heavily damaged by the January 12, 2010 earthquake.
The kits that will be distributed through schools and churches will provide help for rural families that either have no electricity or experience frequent and sometimes lasting power outages.
These kits are in addition to another 2,320 solar panel kits that UMCOR will distribute among the families of Corail Camp, a resettlement community formed after the earthquake. The lack of electricity there makes for a dangerous situation for the residents, especially for women and young girls.
The solar panels operate like small power charging stations and will supply electricity for lights at night to provide enhanced security and to allow students to continue their studies. The solar panels also will provide enough electricity to power up radios and cell phones.

SRI LANKA: BUILDING SMALL BUSINESSES
Despite the destruction caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and years of civil unrest, more than 1,000 Sri Lankans currently enrolled in a livelihoods program implemented by UMCOR are building a future for themselves and their families.
Developed in partnership with Lutheran World Relief, the program identifies vulnerable families in 20 targeted villages and supports them by providing business training and revolving loans and developing self-help groups known as Village Livelihood Groups. Read more here.

PHILIPPINES: HELPING FLOOD-PRONE VILLAGES REDUCE DISASTER RISK
UMCOR is teaming up with the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction to help five flood-prone villages in the Philippines reduce their risk of future disasters. Disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation programs will focus on capacity building in the villages of Rosario municipality, Cavite province.
Because of its location, the Philippines is prone to many types of natural disasters, especially floods during the typhoon season. An average of 20 to 24 typhoons strike the archipelago annually.
