Project Information

Providing salary support for the United Methodist missionary community serving in over 60 countries

Describe the need affecting community

Missionaries witness and serve in dramatically different locales and cultures and engage in a range of professions and activities. They come from many places and backgrounds. Missionaries serve in 60 countries around the world. Missionaries also serve in the United States as Church and Community Workers and with Hispanic/Latino ministries. They are lay and clergy; young adults and retired professionals. Missionaries work as congregational and leadership developers, church planters, pastors, educators, regional coordinators for UMCOR, agriculturalists, health coordinators, and doctors.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

Missionary support is a priority for the General Board of Global Ministries. United Methodist missionaries are partially supported through World Service apportionment dollars; however, apportionments only cover about 38% of the total coast of missionaries. Second-mile giving through The Advance from churches and individuals make up almost 30% of the needed support for missionaries. Increased giving on behalf of missionaries will enable Global Ministries to continue to train, commission and send missionaries on behalf of the United Methodist Church.

Describe the primary goal of the project

To raise at least $6 million for missionary support each year to enable Global Ministries to continue to train, commission and send missionaries around the world and to provide appropriate salary, health insurance, pension, and benefits to support missionaries.
