In 2006, a partnership was established between the Johnson City district of the Holston Conference and the Czech Republic Methodist district. For the first four years mission teams were sent by the Johnson City district to support the local Czech Methodist congregations. In 2010, the superintendent of the Czech United Methodist District approached the Johnson City district about taking the "next step" in the partnership; establishing an English-speaking Methodist church in the Czech Republic to minister to internationals and locals. Both the Czech Republic and Johnson City Superintendents felt there was a need for a United Methodist theological presence in Prague because of the large group of internationals (200,000) and locals that used English in their daily lives. In the summer of 2011 a husband and wife team were sent to Prague to establish the English Speaking United Methodist Church of Prague. In the first eight months of existence, we have established a successful bible study group, advent and lenten worship events, an ongoing ministry with local Czech students, and integrated ourselves into the fabric of the Czech Methodist church.
Goals & Objectives
We will launch the church through: 1) Development of Regular worship services 2) Weekly In-depth scripture-to-life application studies 3) On-going student ministry discussion/action groups and other activities 4) Establishment of a cultural arts center for English language conversation groups, English lessons, summer English camps and music enrichment (choirs, lessons, concerts)
