Project Information

Providing healthcare services for 500,000 people in the province of Inhambane

Describe the need affecting community

Chicuque is the largest health facility in the area, and the only level two hospital covering four districts. It serves a population of over 300,000 with only the basics in medical supplies. The mostly rural community surrounding the hospital relies heavily on agriculture, with many people lacking full time and reliable employment. Despite being at the mercies of the weather and often in the throws of drought and extreme climate, the people of the community keep a positive attitude which can be seen in the smiles of each face. Chicuque Rural Hospital is committed to providing quality health care to the population of the surrounding districts and to act as a center for continual educational improvement in the areas of medicine. These communities face debilitating exposure to Malaria, HIV/AIDs (with 6% of the worlds population being in Mozambique), Tuberculosis, preventable illness from unsanitary conditions and severe cases of malnutrition. These treatable conditions, when help is received, allow patients to maintain a normal standard of living, given the right and appropriate amount of support and follow-up are provided. It is the goal of Chicuque Hospital that all have access to the life-saving methods provided from superior health professionals, quality equipment, and basic knowledge of care.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

The establishment and continuation of this Advance Project secures the funding to allow the fluid operation of the hospital. As there are many gaps created by the Ministry of Health’s approach to adequate health care, the United Methodist Church of Mozambique has stepped in to fulfil the promise as quoted in John, He came to give life and give it abundantly. All contributions to The Advance directly increase access to quality and comprehensive health care. Donations are used to host continual educational training for medical personnel, provide blood drives and operate this Rural Hospital.

Describe the primary goal of the project

Success in this project will be displayed as sustainable approaches to increased access and quality of medical care for a rural population of Mozambique, and to work along side the United Methodist Church’s Global Heath object to provide Abundant Health focusing on Maternal and Infant Care and sharing the love of Jesus Christ.

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project

Chicuque Rural Hospital’s goal is fewer cases of preventable infections and diseases, more use of prenatal care and infant vaccinations, a measurable increase in the quality of life for the community by relieving concern on where to receive the best health care.
