Jessica Stewart is a Global Mission Fellow of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, serving for two years with the Cape Town Bold Empowerment Partnership in the Republic of South Africa. She was commissioned in August 2016.
The Global Mission Fellows program takes young adults ages 20-30 out of their home environments and places them in new contexts for mission experience and service. The program has a strong emphasis on faith and justice. Global Mission Fellows become active parts of their new local communities. They connect the church in mission across cultural and geographical boundaries. They grow in personal and social holiness and become strong young leaders working to build just communities in a peaceful world.
The Cape Town Bold Empowerment Partnership (known as Bold Empowerment) is a nonprofit organization engaged in socio-economic development and poverty alleviation, primarily among women and youth, in Cape Town. Jessica works as a community mapping specialist. The primary focus is on the Lavender Hill and Hanover Park neighborhoods of the Cape Flats area. Fifty-nine percent of the Lavender Hill and Hanover Park households have monthly incomes of $320 or less, and unemployment rates are high.
Jessica is from Georgia, where she is a member of the Glen Haven United Methodist Church in Decatur. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Georgia State University, Atlanta, with an emphasis in nonprofit leadership. She has worked as a cashier and most recently as a human resources intern in the Park ’N Fly corporate office.
Jessica says that her faith journey picked up momentum late in high school. “After experiencing a rough patch, I turned to God and God not only encouraged me but revealed a purpose for my life. Today, I am continuing to build an active relationship with God so that he may best use me.”
“My call to mission is interwoven with what I believe my purpose to be,” Jessica says. “I have a desire for everybody to know that they are not only worthy but can do or be anything because of the magnificent God we serve.”
