Nina Evita Guzman is a Global Mission Fellow of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, serving for two years with Cape Town Bold Empowerment Partnership. She was commissioned in August 2016.
The Global Mission Fellows program takes young adults ages 20-30 out of their home environments and places them in new contexts for mission experience and service. The program has a strong emphasis on faith and justice. Global Mission Fellows become active parts of their new local communities. They connect the church in mission across cultural and geographical boundaries. They grow in personal and social holiness and become strong young leaders working to build just communities in a peaceful world.
Nina is from the Philippines, where she is a member of the Living Word United Methodist Church in Marikina City, in the National Capital Region, a congregation of the Rizal Philippines Annual Conference East. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Miriam College, Quezon City, and a Master of Arts degree in counseling from Ateneo de Manila University, also in Quezon City. She has worked in several university-related educational and psychological programs.
Raised as a “dutiful Christian,” Nina thought her life was all planned out until she reached her mid-20s. She would work, finish her graduate study, “settle down, own a business, get rich, and do mission work” from a comfortable position. She might have settled for this “so-so” life, but God, she says, had other plans. She found herself drifting, and then running away from a sense of God’s call. Shortly after completing her master’s degree she was introduced to the Global Mission Fellows program and instead of running away began to run toward mission service.
“I have always known in my heart that I am called to serve the Lord through mission work, although it took me quite some time to fully acknowledge and accept this.” After considerable internal struggle and vocational exploration, Nina says she “finally decided to let go of my fears and use my God-given skills in the service of others.”
