Rut Arsari Christy is a Global Mission Fellow of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, serving for two years as a program coordinator with the Wesleyan Sinnanen Foundation in Pursan, South Korea. She was commissioned in August 2016.
The Global Mission Fellows program takes young adults ages 20-30 out of their home environments and places them in new contexts for mission experience and service. The program has a strong emphasis on faith and justice. Global Mission Fellows become active parts of their new local communities. They connect the church in mission across cultural and geographical boundaries. They grow in personal and social holiness and become strong young leaders working to build just communities in a peaceful world.
The Wesleyan Sinnanen Foundation, rooted in the mission work of Methodist women, reaches out to young women trapped in poverty and sex trafficking and exposed to other abuses. It seeks to foster spiritual growth and healing. Rut takes part in educational, social, and other programs that restore dignity and hope.
Rut is from Jepara, a city in Indonesia in Central Java, where she is a member of a Mennonite congregation. She holds a degree in English from Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga, Central Java, a school founded in 1956 to prepare Christian teachers. She has taught on the secondary and junior college levels, has worked as a freelance writer, and served as a volunteer with the Mennonite Central Committee in Bogotá, Colombia.
While she grew up in the church, Rut says she did not know the real meaning of following Christ until she was 19 years old; then, an unexpected experience showed her the sustaining power of Jesus and also served as a call to mission. “God showed me that I needed to be his tool to work in his vineyard. He showed me that his love for me is perfect…I decided to share his love and kindness with other people in this world.”
Living in a small village, she found it difficult to obtain information on mission service but found a way. Rut now hopes to be a bridge between opportunities in world mission and the people of her village.
