The Rev. Dr. Chin Cheak Yu, missionary with the Board with Global Ministries of The United Methodist, began her service in Singapore in December 2001.
A clergy member of the California Pacific Annual Conference since 1990, Rev. Dr. Yu is currently a faculty member and lecturer at Trinity Theological College (TTC) and has been Dean of Students since July 2006.
As Dean of Students, Chin Cheak’s concerns focus on the overall quality of student community life, including Christian and ministerial formation, and is a challenging set of activities that combines pastoral care and numerous administrative tasks.
As a faculty member Dr. Yu teaches courses in practical theology such as Christian education and pastoral counseling in both English and Chinese departments, as well as occasional lay training courses. She is among the few who teach in both languages, and in so doing she serves as a bridge in the community. As with other faculty at the union college, Chin Cheak circulates for TTC Sunday among Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian churches as well as numerous independent churches.
Dr. Yu sees many rewards for teaching and serving in this capacity. ”I am blessed at TTC,” she says, ”because of the opportunities for teaching in a global context. It has been a mutual learning experience for the students and myself.” She sees God’s hands everywhere touching students’ lives through financial and academic challenges until they are ready to be sent out for mission and Christian service.
A native of Kampar, Perak, Malaysia, Chin Cheak earned a bachelor's degree in theology from Trinity College, MDiv from Taiwan Theological College in Taipei, a ThM in religious education from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ, and a PhD, also in religious education, from Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, CA. Shortly after completing her PhD, Chin Cheak entered GBGM training and was commissioned as a missionary in December 2001.
Serving in several capacities with local churches since 1988, Chin Cheak first worked as associate pastor with the Chinese United Methodist Church in Los Angeles and then as associate pastor responsible for Chinese ministry with First United Methodist Church in Alhambra. She earlier served as youth director for the Los Angeles Chinese United Methodist Church. She spent brief periods as an educational assistant and mission interpreter for College Drive Presbyterian Church in New Concord, OH, and as a missionary-in-residence in the Upper Ohio Presbytery.
Chin Cheak is married to George R. Martzen, also an ordained pastor and a GBGM missionary. They have one son, Walter Chyau-Yu Martzen, who attends the Singapore American School and enjoys music, reading youth novels and instant messaging his friends.
