The Rev. Ronald Whitlatch is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, currently serving the annual conferences of the Northeastern Jurisdiction as mission interpreter, a position to which he was named in August 2012.
Mission interpreters are active missionaries assigned to interpret the work of Global Ministries as it connects the church in mission around the globe. They serve as resource persons through preaching; teaching; participating in mission celebrations, schools of mission, or other mission events in local churches, districts, or annual conferences. Mission interpreters are links between Global Ministries and annual conferences, and are partners with conference secretaries of global ministries.
A long-time missionary in Argentina, Ron was formerly the director of Hispanic/Latino Ministries in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference, and, still earlier, was clergy in charge of Hispanic/Latinos in Columbus Junction, Iowa and Iowa Conference coordinator of Hispanic/Latino Ministries.
Rev. Whitlatch and his wife, Cathy, served as missionaries in Argentina for 15 years. He was pastor for the Central congregation of the Argentina Evangelical Methodist Church in Mendoza. He also worked as a peace-with-justice educator in the Rocky Mountain Conference from 1992 to 1995. Before his commissioning as a missionary, Ron pastored churches in the West Virginia Conference, of which he is a clergy member.
Prior to his current assignment, Ron was a missionary with the National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministries, working in western Connecticut in the promotion and coordination of ministries with persons of Brazilian descent. He is based in New York City, where Cathy is missionary in residence at the General Board of Global Ministries.
Born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, Ron graduated from Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston) in West Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and religion. He also holds a Master of Divinity degree from the Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio and a Master of Sacred Theology degree, with a focus in church and society, from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
Ron and Cathy are the parents of three adult children: Meg, Hays, and Alberto.
