Connecting the Church in Mission

McKay, Sarah M.

Serving At: Wesley Foundation serving Florida International University and Miami-Dade College in Miami, Florida

Location: United States of America, North America

Sarah MckaySarah McKay is a missionary through the US-2 young adult program of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. Commissioned in August 2012, she is assigned as campus and community liaison for mission and justice at the Wesley Foundation serving Florida International University and Miami-Dade College in Miami, Florida.

US-2 missionaries serve for two years in the United States, usually in ministries that emphasize social justice. Young adult mission service through Global Ministries expands participants’ mission vision and offers faith contexts for the use of skills.

Wesley, the United Methodist campus ministry, is a place to belong, to find community, to learn, and to be challenged to live for something greater than one’s self; to engage in changing the world by living and sharing the love of God with our neighbor.

In Miami, Wesley serves two large, public universities with 12 campuses in the area and more than 200,000 students, a majority of whom are from Hispanic and African-American backgrounds. A significant percentage is on some form of financial assistance and most are first-generation college students.

As liaison for mission and justice, Sarah works to interpret the work of Wesley to the community and to motivate church and community interest in the student ministry. She also encourages students to move out into the community in mission and service.

Sarah McKay is from Apex, North Carolina. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Appalachian State University, Boone, and has a double minor in anthropology and religious studies. During college years, she took part in both the Boone United Methodist Church and a local ministry called The Heart.

Sarah seeks to orient her life, time, actions, and pursuits around those that Jesus lived out, including social justice. “I am continuing to see God in new, simple, yet monumental ways through grace, peace, and joy,” she says. “I desire ministry to be an essential, central aspect throughout my life. I want to learn through ministry…I dream of having my life reflect my passion for the Lord, for people, and for social justice.”
