Serving through the National Plan for Hispanic and Latino Ministries (NPHLM), Rev. Lourdes Magalhaes is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. She is a pastor in Harrison, NJ, with a Brazilian Methodist community.
Lourdes has been active in the church all of her life and became a leader in her church as a teenager. At 15 she began teaching Sunday school and with the help of a friend started a Sunday school in a poor area of Sao Paulo. Initially there were 7 children attending and within one year there were 160 children actively participating.
Studying at Faculdades Capital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, her home country, Ms. Magalhaes majored in language with emphasis on Portuguese and English. She attended University Methodista de Sao Paulo and earned her degree in theology. Lourdes was consecrated in January 2005 and received her first pastoral appointment in February. Sharing thoughts about her role as a pastor in Sao Paulo, Lourdes says, "The experience has been a blessed experience. Their (the congregation) love and care is so great."
Prior to her theological studies, Lourdes worked as a teacher and translator. She also took Bible study courses, missiological courses and a course in cross-cultural communication while living in England. Lourdes feels her call to mission came while taking the cross-cultural course.
