Connecting the Church in Mission

Gordon GranerGordon Graner is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church working in the area of church development with the Iglesia Evangélica Dominicana (Evangelical Church in the Dominican Republic). This assignment became effective in early April 2013.

He and his wife Ardell served for 23 years at the Thiu Rancho Center, a rural ministry 20 miles outside the city of Cochabamba in Bolivia. He has extensive training in agriculture.

The Evangelical Church in the Dominican Republic is a united denomination that brings together congregations of Methodist, Presbyterian, Wesleyan, and Moravian roots stretching back to 1919. The church has some 10,000 members.

“Although it was difficult to leave our Bolivian family and our adopted home,” Gordon says, “we are convinced that God has brought us to the Dominican Republic to begin the journey of the second half of our lives. Everything here is new and different and we must once again humble ourselves and become like children. To be a missionary is to bridge cultures. Across this bridge we walk and meet our new neighbors, sharing our lives with them and they with us. We hope that our United Methodist Church family will continue or join anew this journey mission.”

Gordon first became interested in agriculture during high school when his mother married a farmer. In college he worked summers on his stepfather’s farm. After seminary Gordon worked for four years in refugee resettlement with World Relief in Chicago.

A native of Bismarck, North Dakota, Gordon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural/Animal Science from North Dakota State University in Fargo, and a Master of Arts degree in Religion, (evangelism and mission) from Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. He also has a certificate in urban ministry from North Park Seminary in Chicago.

Gordon and Ardell are the parents of three children: Jenny, Samuel, and Hannah. Hannah was born in Cochabamba and holds dual US and Bolivian citizenship.
