The United Methodist Church

Connecting the Church in Mission

The Rev. Dr. Mark Abbott is a United Methodist missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries assigned with his wife, Diane, also a GBGM missionary, to serve in Madrid, Spain. He is professor of New Testament in the United Evangelical Theological Seminary.

The United Evangelical Theological Seminary (SEUT) is an institution of the Spanish Evangelical Church and the Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church. Founded in 1884, it is the oldest Protestant seminary in Spain. SEUT offers both theological extension and residency programs. Their vision is to help prepare spiritual leaders, both clergy and lay, for the Spanish Protestant community without focusing upon a particular denomination.

Prior to this assignment in Spain, the Abbotts served in Monterey, Mexico, where Mark was professor of New Testament and academic dean of the John Wesley Seminary, one of two seminaries of the Methodist Church of Mexico.

During a previous period of service in Madrid, Mark taught at SEUT. Besides teaching at the seminary, he also served as pastor of the English-speaking Community Church of Madrid. This congregation relates to the Madrid Presbytery of the Spanish Evangelical Church. The Spanish Evangelical Church became a covenant church with The United Methodist Church in 1996.

A native of Lubbock, Texas, Mark earned a BA in Spanish from Oral Roberts University, and a Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. After seminary he served Plains UMC in Plains, Texas. Later, he attended Drew University where he obtained a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies. Mark is a John Wesley Fellow of A Foundation for Theological Education (AFTE). He is a clergy member of the Northwest Texas Annual Conference.

The Abbotts have three children: Andy, Caroline, and Christopher. Andrew was born in the US, Caroline in Madrid, Spain, and Christopher in Monterey, Mexico.
